The Universe is just way, way too big, the future ramifications of at least many of your actions way too vast for us to have even the faintest idea what actions will cause more good to exist than any other, not just proximally but in the very very long term, from now to the heat death of the Universe. One, I think, fatal, problem is that a theory that tells us to perform at any given time “that action, which will cause more good to exist in the Universe than any possible alternative” is a theory that fails spectacularly to do what we want an ethical theory to do: offer some practical guidance in life. There are several good reasons not to be a utilitarian. Though many of the philosophers I most esteem and respect are utilitarians, I am not. Moore dramatically put it, “Our ‘duty’… can only be defined as that action, which will cause more good to exist in the Universe than any possible alternative.” What makes utilitarianism distinctive is its understanding of what goodness or value consists in, namely happiness or utility. It is a species of consequentialism, the theory that tells us we should seek to act in ways that will maximize the goodness or value of the consequences of our actions. Check out 100 Layer Cake for even more photos from the shoot.Utilitarianism is an ethical theory with a long and distinguished history. You guys captured them perfectly! Simply Bloom is based in Alabama, but available for travel worldwide. And thanks so much to Christine and Vania of Simply Bloom for letting me share your work. Thanks Danni for sharing your photos and tips with us! You guys are so adorable! Be sure to check out her blog for lots of pretty inspiration. Thanks to Jen for featuring these photos today! The bubbles in the desert was such a neat contrast and it was fun to see all the effort we put into it play out. Our engagement shoot was lovely, I really tried to just take the whole experience in. We just brought in clothes that was just sitting in our closet and got trade value for new clothes – we actually were able to use all our trade credit and not spend any money on new clothes for the shoot! So we headed out to las vegas to meet with simply bloom – the girls had chosen a really great location for the shoot, we were so excited. If you have a buy/sell/trade shop in your area – I highly recommend trying those stores first. ) So we spent the day shopping at buy/sell/trade shops (buffalo exchange/crossroads) and thrift stores. How romantic does this look with all the bubbles? Too sweet! From Danni, I’ve always loved that scene in Cinderella where she is cleaning the floor and bubbles are all over – so I thought it’d be fun to get a bubblemachine for the shoot.Ĭhoosing our outfits was also fun because it gave me an excuse to get Nick some new clothes, he never shops for himself. I came across these 4-foot letters on etsy when I was searching for small vintage letters and knew right away it’d fit perfect for our photos. When I started thinking about what I wanted our engagement photos to look like, I immediately knew I wanted to do something really unique and to our style. Of course selecting the ladies of Simply Bloom Photography to capture them was such a perfect choice! They decided to capture their session in the desert near Las Vegas – simply so romantic! Danni provided a bit more about her thoughts into the session also – thanks Danni! Danni is one of the sweetest bloggers out there, and I just love how she styled the shoot. I’m so excited to share today’s engagement session with you guys! The lovely couple is Danni from Oh, Hello, Friend and her fiance Nick.
